About Current
Current is a Canadian KYB (Know Your Business) platform. We bring all 14 Canadian business registries — every province and territory, plus federal — into one API, so financial institutions can find, verify and monitor businesses with far less manual review and much higher automation rates.
We're a founding team with paying customers and a profitable, growing business. We're building something durable rather than chasing a big raise, and we use AI across everything we do — including the products we're building.
The role
You'll be our first full-time engineering hire — and because of that, you'll touch everything: data pipelines, product, systems, reliability, the AI tooling we build with, and the AI-native products we're building. If you want a diversity of hard problems rather than one narrow lane, this is that role.
This is a hybrid role based in Toronto, Ontario. We're in our office near Trinity Bellwoods two or three days a week. Expect walks around the park, team lunches, and time spent together in person.
Why this role
- Join a profitable, growing business. We're building something durable — not racing a runway — so the work compounds instead of resetting.
- Shape everything. As the first engineer, your decisions set the architecture, the practices, the product and the team that comes after you.
- Real ownership. Above-market equity and a direct hand in product and direction — you'll work with the founders, not off a spec.
- An AI-native team. We use AI across the whole company and we're building AI-native products — and we need your help pushing that further.
What you'll work on
- Our product. Help decide what we build next — turning customer problems and your own ideas into shipped features, and weighing what matters most and why.
- Data correctness. Registry ingestion, enrichment and reconciliation across sources.
- Reliability. Monitoring, alerting and incident response for a product compliance teams depend on.
- The technical backlog. Sequence resiliency work, tech debt and bugs against new features.
- The team. Hiring and leading the engineers who come after you.
- How we build. An AI-native workflow — agents, automated PRs, strong review — plus the AI-native product features we're shipping.
Who you are
Must-haves
- 6+ years building production systems that real customers relied on, ideally including time as an early engineer at a startup.
- You've owned a system end to end, not just your tickets.
- You use frontier AI coding tools daily and are excellent at reviewing and steering AI-generated code.
- A strong communicator — you explain technical tradeoffs plainly, to engineers and non-engineers alike.
- Ready to lead: you've mentored or led engineers, and still want to code most of the week.
- A product mindset — you care about customers and outcomes, not just the code.
Strong pluses
- You enjoy messy data: pipelines, entity resolution, reconciling third-party sources.
- Experience in fintech, compliance, risk, KYC/KYB or AML, or working alongside those teams.
- Our stack: TypeScript, React and Next.js, Postgres, and event-driven background jobs.
Don't meet every point? If you're close and excited, apply anyway. We care far more about range, judgment and ownership than a perfect checklist, and we're open to unconventional backgrounds.
Hiring process
We'll try to move as quickly as possible and share progress as we go.
- Apply through the form. (~10 min) Tell us about yourself and a few things you've owned end to end. We read every application.
- Intro call with a founder. (~30 min) A conversation about the role, the company and what you've owned — enough for both sides to decide it's worth going further.
- In person with both founders, at our Toronto office. (~1 hr) We go deeper on your experience, how you think about ownership and tradeoffs, and how we'd work together day to day.
- Technical assessment. (~2 hrs) Either a paid work trial on real tickets — a few days shipping something real, paid at a fair rate, where your current employment terms allow it — or a real-time working session on a new feature or enhancement.
- Share three references. We'll reach out to people you've worked with, for, or led.
- Offer. If there's a mutual fit, we'll move as quickly as we can to share a strong offer.
